About Me – The Home Flare

Hey, I'm Susan.

Home lover, DIY enthusiast, and your new cozy corner of the internet.

Hi there, and welcome. I'm Susan — a homemaker, a maker-of-things, a lover of warm candles and mismatched throw pillows, and the person behind The Home Flare. If you've landed here, chances are you love your home just as much as I do. And I am so glad you found your way here.

This little corner of the internet is where I share everything I've learned, tested, failed at, tried again, and eventually gotten right. It's about making your home feel like yours — cozy, beautiful, and full of life — without spending a fortune or needing a design degree.

Pull up a chair. Let me tell you my story.

How It All Began

Cozy living room

Let me take you back to the little apartment I moved into years ago. It was small — almost hilariously small. One bedroom, one bathroom, a kitchen the size of a closet, and walls that I swear were the saddest shade of beige you've ever seen in your life.

I had almost no furniture. No budget to speak of. And a deep, undeniable itch to make it feel like home.

So I started doing what any slightly obsessive nester does: I thrifted. I painted. I rearranged things at 11pm. I hot-glued things that didn't need to be hot-glued. I watched every YouTube tutorial twice and Pinned things I had absolutely no business attempting.

And something magical happened. That sad little apartment? It started to glow. Not from expensive furniture or a big renovation — but from intention. From care. From little decisions that said, I live here, and this place matters to me.

"I realized that a beautiful home isn't about having the most — it's about being deliberate with what you have."

— Susan, The Home Flare

The Moment Everything Changed

A few years later, I got married and we bought our first real house. And I will not lie to you — I cried actual happy tears standing in the empty living room on moving day. It was ours.

But buying a house also meant staring down rooms that needed everything — paint, furniture, rugs, storage, light, personality. And doing it on a budget that laughed at me when I walked into certain stores.

Home decor styling

That's when I really dove deep. I started learning everything I could about home styling. Which paint undertones work in low light. How to layer a bookshelf so it doesn't look like a junk pile. Why proportion matters more than price. How a $12 thrifted lamp with a new shade can anchor an entire room.

Friends started asking me for help with their spaces. Then their friends asked. Then strangers on the internet started sliding into my DMs after I posted a living room rearrange on a whim.

That's when I thought — maybe I should write this down.

So I did. And The Home Flare was born.

What The Home Flare Is Really About

Home styling details

Here's what I want you to know about this blog: it is not a place where everything is perfectly staged and nothing is real. I have a junk drawer. I have a corner of the garage I refuse to show anyone. I have painted a wall the wrong color and cried about it.

What this blog is — is honest. It's the real stuff. The things that actually worked, the mistakes worth learning from, and the ideas that made my house feel like a home without draining my bank account.

I believe deeply that every person deserves a home they love walking into. Not just people with big budgets or huge spaces. Every single person.

That belief is what gets me out of bed in the morning. Well, that and coffee. Mostly coffee, if I'm being honest. ☕

✨ A Few Things About Me

  • 🏡 I have rearranged my living room more times than I can count — and I will probably do it again next month.
  • 🕯️ I am physically incapable of walking past a candle without smelling it. Every single one.
  • 🌿 My garden is my happy place. Even in winter, I'm out there planning what I'll plant in spring.
  • 🛒 I can find something beautiful in a thrift store in under 10 minutes. It's a gift, honestly.
  • 📚 My idea of a perfect weekend is a DIY project, a good audiobook, and a pot of soup on the stove.
  • 🎨 I have a basket entirely dedicated to craft supplies that "might be useful someday." It is overflowing. I have no regrets.

You're Home Now

The best part of starting The Home Flare has been you. The readers who email me at midnight to ask if olive green works with warm wood tones (yes, always). The people who send me before-and-after photos of rooms they transformed using something they found here. The comments that say, "I never thought I could make my space look like this."

Those messages make everything worth it. Every late night writing. Every photo retaken four times. Every project that didn't go to plan but turned into a good story.

This community is something I don't take lightly. You've trusted me with your spaces — the rooms you actually live in — and I treat that as the privilege it is.

"Whether your home is a studio apartment, a suburban house, or something in between — it deserves to feel like a flare of beauty. That's why we're here."

— Susan
